Character Introduction

Below is an introduction of a character I have created over the years, named Oliver Orilyus. My process for making this character was through watching an animated show called RWBY by Rooster Teeth, who's series creator, Monty Oum, shared a character creation guide of the show for role-players. At the time of the show's release I was new to the role-playing experience, but through finding like-minded people on Facebook I began my journey as a creative writer. This blog will focus on the origin story of Oliver the monkey faunus, the components of making character arcs in general, and how his character arc is defined.

Backstory:
As a young monkey faunus, Oliver seemed to loved his large faunus family. They traveled around to vast places across the forest they lived in. From the woods of the east to as far as the deserts and oases in the west. In their travels the family of monkey faunus encountered various creatures of darkness, known as Grimm, and avoided them in most situations. Over the years they have lost family members to the Grimm in their escapes, and so decided to travel in smaller groups, separating the family. Oliver was then traveling village to village with his four other siblings for several months. At one point, the village they stayed was attacked by multiple Grimm, destroying the village. In this effort to escape, one sibling sacrificed theirself as a diversion for Oliver and the other siblings to run away, but became surrounded--unable to rejoin them. The survivors of the village stuck together, where Oliver met a human named Malery and snake faunus named Kritan, who he and his siblings grew to rely on as caretakers. Malery was the mother figure while Kritan focused on training them to defend themselves rather than default to escaping. Since it seemed that everywhere they went destruction came, and after experiencing such separation from his original family, Oliver decided to become stronger by himself and began traveling alone. While he said his goodbyes before he departed, Malery gave a parting gift of a peridot gem for good luck and hope in dark times. Within a year of being on his won, Oliver heard of a training academy for Huntsmen and Huntresses called Beacon. Oliver managed to be accepted by the knowledge of his hardships. This academy trains those accepted into Hunters, capable of defeating the creatures of Grimm.

  1. Wow, this was so interesting to read! Being a creative writer is definitely a skill. Reading your story of Oliver made me feel like I was a part of the story! After reading, I feel like I want to be accepted into the academy to train to become a Hunter, haha.

  2. Abdul, this is really interesting man. You have a sharp imagination, so I think creative writing really suits you. Speaking of writing, you should consider working for The Pine Needle on campus. You can write reviews about games, movies, and other art that you are interested in. I am sure there are other students on campus who share your passions.
